| October 22, 2000. I am writing
you from a sidewalk bar in Rio at Ipanema Beach; sitting in fact on the
ACJ Memorial Stool. It is a beautiful day here, just right for fresh
info for folks with a fondness for frontal lobe felicity and paradise
on terra firma. What better place to see life anew -- what better
time than the eternal now?!
If you could turn off your hearing of both the external and internal
worlds and look at the non essential activities in which men spend much
of their lives,
what you would see, had you the interest,
is all that should be needed to give you an entirely new,
and enlightened view of what this thing called
being,"a creature with consciousness” is actually about. But as
long as the awareness with which you read these words is confined totally
to the consciousness natural to you it is not possible for you to have
any objective comprehension of its nature and m.o. If you stay
in your room you will never see how your room works, and the way your
room works results in the “you” you believe is sitting there reading
these words at this very moment. But the thing is, your room works
perfectly well and just as it should without you having any outside
knowledge of it. This is why some have always said that men live
their lives in a kind of dream, and in a night time dream there is not
even the appearance of “free will” in what you do. You walk through
each scene as though it were scripted and you have no choice but to
accept what happens, and some say that man’s day time existence is for
all practical purposes, no different.
If this be so then it obviously is not obvious. If this be really
the way things are then it does not come natural to man to realize it.
If life is actually like this then it plainly requires some sort of
non standard effort and ability to see it. (A subject that is the sole
topic of these daily reports.)
If there is something to be known about being alive that does not come
as standard equipment with being alive then how might one obtain it?
Not by drugs, chanting, meditating, praying, whirling, reading,
or imitating another human being.
The knowledge of life comes from the looking at life,
but not looking done through standard issue I’s.
If you merely look at life through the consciousness
that came with your brain
you will never see anything other than the image of life that your consciousness
was factory wired to perceive.
When you consider it like this,
it couldn’t be plainer, or more predictable.
But note, that no one seems interested in considering it like this,
or at all, for that matter.
Each man’s consciousness is not only factory wired to perceive life
within a certain bandwidth; in certain colors; at a certain speed; at
a certain volume,
but also pre-set to give no notice to the factory wired arrangement.
Consciousness consists of the brain talking and listening to itself.
Men call this, “thinking” and it does its normal job quite easily and
well.
What thinking cannot do so easily is hold an awareness of the full activity
of consciousness both talking and listening to itself. In fact
what ordinary men call consciousness consist simply of an awareness
of one half of the full operation. A man’s consciousness ordinarily
consists of his instant awareness of either the brain’s talking, or
else its listening to itself.
This is the consciousness sufficient to live a perfectly adequate routine
life --
but not sufficient to satisfy a few.
Trying to still the mind, or even stop thoughts is the predictably
apparent approach to the situation for the few with that certain hunger,
but most who ever go to that corner of their room never come back satisfied.
Why?
Ask yourself -- why?
Then ask yourself again -- why?
And don’t be satisfied with any answer,
ask yourself again -- why?
Trying to constantly hold in mind a certain word, symbol, or mental
task is a cover story for the above approach, and while they may seem
more subtle and doable, still no one gets satisfied therefrom.
Again I urge you to ask yourself -- why?
Why do the approaches seem, feel so right,
and offer such a paucity of conclusive rewards?
Ask yourself -- why?
Now,
turn off your hearing aids in both ears,
the ones to the world,
and the ones to your thoughts,
and just sit here with me on a stool,
and calmly look at life as being lived by the conscious creatures, man,
and -- BAM!
one day it will hit you right between the I’s –
right in the space between your brain’s talking,
and its listening to itself.
You will indeed feel like you have just awakened from a dreamy doze;
it is as though you have suddenly --
come to your full senses.
For a few, there is nothing in life like it.
And hey, everybody needs a hobby, right?!
Gonna go hit the surf.
You can take the special
stool now.
