November 3, 2000. What a way to
end the week –
a bright Friday morning on the warm, beautiful beach in Moscow.
And from a motel window just above where I am sunning in the sand,
comes the voice of a son, saying to his father:
“I enjoy reading about ‘waking up’ almost as much --
-- or maybe more -- than I do actually trying to do it.
Is this dangerous?”
“Yes,” the elder replied.
After a brief silence, the lad asked:
“But is it natural?”
“Yes”, responded his father.
Then after another short pause, the son asked:
“So it is both dangerous and natural?”
“Yes,” said his father,
and this time the subsequent silence lasted
eight years as the son grappled with the question:
“If one of the qualities of something is that it is ‘natural’
how can it have any other characteristics
even worth noticing?!”
Every human being is instantly receptive
to the notion that man is part of a great struggle between two opposing
forces. As soon as consciousness in children is verbally viable they
knowingly react to instructions given them based on a principle of
right vs wrong behavior,
and all normal adults, regardless of sophistication,
feel that there is a continual battle going on between
desirable and undesirable powers;
those that are constructive,
and those that are destructive,
(usually termed, “good & evil”).
Abandoning the childlike picture of man being caught up in a power
struggle between supernatural forces,
what can a man interested in,
getting-to-the-bottom-of-things
make of this?
There is in the
life of man a, “vying for control” --
it is occurring at the cellular level, and can be validly viewed
as the unacknowledged wellspring of his inherent sensation of
there being a
great power struggle.
But the true contest does not exist outside of man
-- out in the physical world --
its effects are tangibly evident there,
which draw man’s attention, and help keep the actual conflict from
being recognized.
The struggle is taking place in man,
but it is not between supernatural forces of,
“good & evil”, or, “gods & demons,”
it is going on in man’s brain, and it is a vying for control between
the physiological forces that operate below consciousness, and cellular
consciousness itself.
(Once this is realized,
its ramifications, and revelations are so obvious that I leave it
with you to pursue in greater detail,
for I have more refined fish to fry here today.)
Wanting to “Wake up” -- to “achieve
Enlightenment,”
is the neurons responsible for conscious thought in your brain wanting
to comprehend themselves.
It is not “you” who wants to awaken --
it is cells in your brain.
These certain cortical cells produce
conscious thought,
and from conscious thought comes
your sense of “you,”
and whatever interests these cells
becomes “your” interest.
None of this is mystical or metaphysical in the least,
(and in point of fact,
no scientific, neurological, or cognitive findings can fault what
I have described.)
But of course my intention here is not to try to make some scientific
point, but rather to point to physically observable realities about
man that can aid you in that
very special subject about which all these reports be.
In speaking of what cells are thinking
we are obviously confined to doing so in human language; whatever thoughts
I describe as being in a cell’s mind is an act not totally dissimilar
to what ordinary men do when they tell you what God thinks about some
matter,
but herein I aim in the opposite direction,
toward the source of all thoughts, (including the ones ordinary
men have concerning what God’s are.)
So, even though we cannot know literally,
what cells “think”,
(since we do not know what language they use --
-- but, wait a minute! –
that’s not true --
we DO know what language they speak !
They alone are responsible for all of OUR speech
so our speech is THEIR speech,
just in another form.
[well, now that we got that straightened out….]),
it is beyond question that every thought you ever have originates
in the electrochemical activity going on in the cells that make up your
cerebral cortex;
every word you ever speak has its genesis in the same cellular activity.
It isan indisputable, non-mystical fact that every thing “you” ever
do from writing a poem, to running a race, to eating a bagel is the
direct result of cellular activity
in your body,
and in every instance, the cells involved had an interest, a purpose
in what they ultimately caused “you” to do.
How can a man’s desire to,
“Wake up” and “Be Enlightened”
be an exception to the above?
It can’t –
so what is the specific interest and purpose of cells in your brain
producing in your consciousness,
thoughts that say, “I want to -- Wake Up!
I want to -- Be Enlightened!
I want to -- Know The Secret!
I want to experience -- The Great Liberation.”
What’s this all about at the cellular,
fountainhead level?
By my instant model, when conscious
thought is not specifically involved in survival related problem solving,
(which obviously, like all other physiological operations, is its primary
reason for being),
the neural cells which physically produce thoughts,
(as surely as does the pancreas, insulin),
turn reflective, and in their “free time” become
as philosophical as does man,
(and how could it be otherwise,
seeing as how it is them that causes him to be so
in the first place?!)
The cells in your brain responsible for all thought,
and consciousness itself,
as evidenced by everything from man’s
myth-making, to his divinity-inventing;
from his creation-of, and then study-of:
Philosophy, Psychology, History, Anthropology,
Geology, Cosmology, and Neurology,
all bear blatant witness to their hunger for the same knowledge that
men themselves say they seek:
“Where did we come from?” and
“What is our purpose in being here?”
Simply put: If you -- want to “wake up,”
the cortical cells in your brain – want to Wake Up.
The search for, “the Truth” -- for, “the Secret”
is not at heart, your search -- but -- their search.
It is not “you” who are unseasonably dissatisfied,
but rather -- them –
the cells in your brain responsible for you thinking:
“Jeeze! I’m dissatisfied!”
I bring you this
report today not as an intriguing intellectual toy;
I found the personal realization of what I have above
attempted to describe of great practical value,
and all that I can relate to you that I know for a fact
has potential practical value is that which had same with me.
Once an appropriate person hears the idea that,
“Man is asleep and living in a world of dreams,”
and adopts it as his own,
the more important it becomes in his life,
the more self-centered does his thinking become,
and he inevitably gets inhibitingly enthralled,
and entangled in his own internal monologue;
he becomes a, “man-of-one-tongue,”
a speaker of a, “single language.”
Edward-wanting-to-awaken
eventuallythinksand talks only in, "Edward-speak."
Edward is “asleep” now,
though Edward wants to “wake up.”
Edward will always be asleep,
though Edward will never be aware of
it.
Man’s natural state is what the brain cells of a few have labeled,
“Being asleep,”
and if you say that you understand what that means,
and know where the notion came from,
you could not be more in man’s “natural state.”
If what I have written to you about today does not pretty immediately
hit you in the cerebral stomach
then the term, “being normal, natural and asleep”
doesn’t begin to do you justice.
Turning your attention to the cellular basis of all
of this
can be a most refreshing, invigorating, and
eye-opening slap to the parochial mouth.
Here is one describable approach to
using the above:
think about “you” on the cellular level,
and not on the level that is natural to your thinking.
Try it,
and don’t get bogged down before you even start by saying: “I don’t
know how to think about myself on the cellular level” --- hell,
no one does! -- AND,
everyone does!
Every thought you have is already on the cellular level --
but ordinary men never think about it.
Now you can –
it CAN be -- MOST
profitable.
Well, the old Moscobovian tide is coming in,
so it is time for us to move on.
.....Don’t take any wooden rubles,
(unless that’s all
they’ve got.)

Regarding all problems, both metalic and mental:
as any mechanic looking for the source of a
noise will tell you:
"Once you locate it, it is then so obvious
that
you want to smack yourself in the head with
a wrench."
Let that be your watchword -- the
"OBVIOUS."
What is real is obvious;
what is true is obvious;
the reality of,"waking up" -- (oh yeah) --
is also obvious,
(once you locate it.)
Okay, let's try it again;
while I gun the engine you listen for the sound that says:
"Men are made to perceive a 'me' as being their overseer of things,
but there is an overseer that oversees their 'me' thing.
